A double gate, also known as a driveway gate, is made up of two gate leaves of equal measurement, providing security and access for both vehicles and your home.

The most common use for double gates is for driveways, so the optimal size should accommodate vehicles with plenty of space either side for clearance and pedestrian access. 

For drives with more than one vehicle, the gates will need to be much wider for extra clearance and space. If you need support with measuring up for your double gate, please contact our friendly team who will be happy to help. 

The maximum width of double gates we can manufacture at Wortley Brothers is 6000mm – you will receive two 3000mm gate leaves. 

Here are our four simple steps to help you measure the width for your new double gate: 

1. Measure the total space you have for everything to fit into, including the new gates, posts, and clearance gaps. Let’s use an example of 3000mm.
2. Minus the widths of any posts you require from the previous measurement. For example, if you’re using two 145mm wide posts, this would equal 290mm. The new total measurement would be 2710mm.
3. Minus 10mm from each side, and another 10mm in the centre, totalling 30mm. This is to allow for clearance gaps on either side and between the gate leaves, so that the gate will not catch and can open smoothly. For example, the new total measurement would be 2680mm.
4. Finally, these measurements will leave you with a total width for the double gate for you to order. When you input this measurement, you will receive two gate leaves that equal this total width. In our example, the final width would be 2680mm, and you would receive two 1340mm gate leaves.

Here are our three simple steps to help you measure the height: 

1. Measure the total height from the floor to the top of the gate post.
2. Minus 30mm for the clearance gap below the gate. This is to allow the gate to open freely and not catch.
3. Finally, these measurements will leave you with a total height for your gate.

We will manufacture your gate to the exact height and width measurements you order, without deducting any tolerances or gaps. Therefore, it’s important you take these off in your own measurements. We will calculate the width of each gate leaf to total the double gate width measurement that you provide.

Our double gates will open either inwards or outwards, with the placement of the hinges during installation deciding how the gates will open. For example, from the front view, the hinge will either be flush against the front of the post and gate to open outwards, or flush against the back of the post and gate to open inwards.
