Frequently Asked Questions
Five bar gates, also known as a field gate, is a classic wooden gate with five horizontal slats. Wortley Brothers five bar gates feature diamond bracing to provide extra strength and stability. This style of gate is popular for farm spaces to control livestock, pedestrian, and vehicle access.
Our five bar gates are available in single, double, and split gate configurations. So, the five bar gate you choose will affect how you measure the width.
Here are our four simple steps to help you measure the width for your new five bar gate:
- Measure the total space you have for everything to fit into, including the new gate, posts, and clearance gaps. Let’s use an example of 2000mm.
- Minus the widths of any posts you require from the previous measurement. For example, if you’re using two 145mm wide posts, this would equal 290mm. The new total measurement would be 1710mm.
- Minus 10mm from each side, and another 10mm in the centre for double and split configurations. This is to allow for clearance gaps on either side and between double gate leaves, so that the gate will not catch and can open smoothly. For example, the new total measurement for a single five bar gate would be 1690mm and 1680mm for double and split field gates. If using traditional hinges you need to leave additional 110mm per hinge.
- For single five bar gates, 1680mm would be the final measurement for you to input when you place your order, and is the full gate width you would receive. For a double field gate, you would input 1680mm into the configurator, and then receive two 840mm gate leaves. Finally, for a split five bar gate, you would input two measurements for the left and right gate leaves to total 1680mm – for example, one would be 1000mm and the other 680mm.
Here are our three simple steps to help you measure the height:
- Measure the total height from the floor to the top of the gate post.
- Minus 30mm for the clearance gap below the gate. This is to allow the gate to open freely and not catch.
- Finally, these measurements will leave you with a total height for your gate.
We will manufacture your gate to the exact height and width measurements you order, without deducting any tolerances or gaps. Therefore, it’s important you take these off in your own measurements.

Our five bar field gates will open either inwards or outwards. The placement of the hinges when you install them will decide which way they open. For example, from the front view, the hinge will either be flush against the front of the post and gate to open outwards, or flush against the back of the post and gate to open inwards.
