Frequently Asked Questions
A single gate is, as the name suggests, one single panel of wood that hangs on one side by a hinge to a wall or post, opening in one fixed direction. It is usually a simple access point for pedestrians in gardens or side entrances.
The best width for a single wooden gate depends on its intended use. Standard pedestrian and garden gates should be around 3 feet wide to allow for clear access. This includes measurements to allow for expansion gaps and posts.
The maximum width for a single gate we can manufacture at Wortley Brothers is 3000mm.
Here are our four simple steps to help you measure the width for your new single gate:
- Measure the total space you have for everything to fit into, including the new gate, posts, and clearance gaps. Let’s use an example of 1300mm.
- Minus the widths of any posts you require from the previous measurement. For example, if you’re using two 145mm wide posts, this would equal 290. The new total measurement would be 1010mm.
- Minus 10mm each side, totalling 20mm. This is to allow for clearance gaps so that the gate will not catch and can open smoothly. For example, the new total measurement would be 990mm.
- Finally, these measurements will leave you with a total width for just the single gate for you to order. In our example, the width would be 990mm.
Here are our three simple steps to help you measure the height:
- Measure the total height from the floor to the top of the gate post.
- Minus 30mm for the clearance gap below the gate. This is to allow the gate to open freely and not catch.
- Finally, these measurements will leave you with a total height for your gate.
We will manufacture your gate to the exact height and width measurements you order, without deducting any tolerances or gaps. Therefore, it’s important you take these off in your own measurements.

Our single gates are designed to open either inwards or outwards, and the placement of the hinge during installation will decide how the gate will open. For example, from the front view, the hinge will either be flush against the front of the post and gate to open outwards, or flush against the back of the post and gate to open inwards.
If you are planning for your gates to open outwards, you will need to include a hinge packer to your order.
