Bedfordshire Vertical Unequal Split
£645.00
Unequal split gates are suitable when using the smaller gate regularly and only opening the larger gate when needed; these are a good choice so your not opening up a larger double gate just for pedestrian access.
To ensure that all our Unequal split gates are of the highest quality, our skilled craftsmen hand-make each Unequal split gate to your bespoke measurements. Wortley Brothers are the only UK-based wooden gate manufacturer to offer custom sizes made to the millimetre. At nearly three inches thick (70mm), our Unequal split gates are constructed using a heavy-duty planed 95 x 70 mm framework, fully planed tongue and groove boards and marine grade stainless steel pins, employing time honoured carpentry skills, mortise and tenon joints are created which are then glued and dowelled to fortify them for maximum strength.
We only use the very best premium grade Scandinavian Redwood timber and African Iroko Hardwood. All this, and Wortley Brothers can fully manufacture and deliver your made-to-measure matching side panels in the United Kingdom fastest made-to-measure lead time.

Configuration Guide
Height
Here are our three simple steps to help you measure the height for your new gates:
- Measure the total height from the floor to the top of the gate post.
- Minus 30mm for the clearance gap below the gates. This is to allow the gates to open freely and not catch.
- Finally, these measurements will leave you with a total height for your gates.
Example:
Total Measured Space = 1800mm
Minus Clearance Gap: 1800mm – 30mm = 1770mm
Total Height to Order = 1770mm
We will manufacture your gate to the exact height measurement you order, without deducting any tolerances or gaps. Therefore, it’s important you take these off in your own measurements.
Width
Here are our four simple steps to help you measure the width for your new gates:
- Measure the total space you have for everything to fit into, including the new gates, posts, and a clearance gap.
- Minus the widths of any posts you require from the previous measurement.
- Minus your clearance gap, which will be 10mm each side plus an extra 10mm between the gates, totalling 30mm. This is so that the gates will not catch and can open smoothly.
- Finally, these measurements will leave you with a total width for your gates.
When taking the width measurement, make sure you are measuring from the front view.
Example:
Total Measured Space = 3000mm
Minus Posts: 3000mm – 290mm (2 x posts at 145mm each) = 2710mm
Minus Clearance Gap: 2710mm – 30mm (10mm each side and 10mm between the gates) = 2680mm
Total Width to Order = 2680mm
We will manufacture your gate to the exact width measurement you order, without deducting any tolerances or gaps. Therefore, it’s important you take these off in your own measurements.
Wood Types
At Wortley Brothers, we offer two premium wood types. Both Scandinavian Redwood and African Iroko Hardwood are premium grade wood.
Our wooden gates and garage doors are handmade and manufactured in-house using these wood types by our team of skilled experts.
Scandinavian Redwood
This premium grade timber experiences minimal moving, swelling, shrinking or warping, which ensures that your new product will stand the test of time.
Our Scandinavian Redwood costs us 35% more than standard timber – a cost which we carry ourselves and do not reflect back in our prices to you.
African Iroko Hardwood
This hardwood is an extremely durable timber that is naturally resistant to decay and rot, even before any treatment is applied. This is a beautiful premium grade hardwood made to last for years to come. Sourced from the west coast of tropical Africa.

The best height and width for a wooden gate depends on its intended use.
Unequal split gates are optimal for spaces that need both vehicle and standard pedestrian access, with the former using the larger width door, and the latter using the smaller width door. The smaller pedestrian door is usually around 900mm.
Our split gates will open either inwards or outwards. You can decide which way they will operate when installing the hinges. For example, from the front view, the hinge will either be flush against the front of the post and gate to open outwards, or flush against the back of the post and gate to open inwards.
If you are planning for your split gates to open outwards, you will need to include a hinge packer to your order.
