Split gates, also known as 3/4 split driveway gates or 70/30 split gates, are double gates of unequal measurement. These gates are made up of a smaller gate leaf, often used for quick and easy pedestrian access, and a wider gate leaf, often for vehicle access. This provides easier, space-saving access.

3/4 split gates are most commonly used for spaces that require frequent pedestrian access and occasional vehicle access, such as a residential driveway. The optimal size of these gates should accommodate both vehicles and pedestrians with plenty of space either side for clearance and easy access.

The maximum width of split gates we can manufacture at Wortley Brothers is 6000mm – you will receive two gate leaves of unequal measurement that total this. When configuring, you will need to input your measurement for each left and right gate leaf.

Here are our four simple steps to help you measure the width for your new split gate: 

1. Measure the total space you have for everything to fit into, including the new gates, posts, and clearance gaps. Let’s use an example of 3000mm.
2. Minus the widths of any posts you require from the previous measurement. For example, if you’re using two 145mm wide posts, this would equal 290mm. The new total measurement would be 2710mm.
3. Minus 10mm from each side, and another 10mm in the centre, totalling 30mm. This is to allow for clearance gaps on either side and between the gate leaves, so that the gate will not catch and can open smoothly. For example, the new total measurement would be 2680mm.
4. Finally, divide this into two unequal measurements. This will leave you with the total measurements for you to order – simply input the left and right measurements into our configuration. In our example, the left gate would be 1000mm, and the right would be 1680mm.

Here are our three simple steps to help you measure the height: 

1. Measure the total height from the floor to the top of the gate post.
2. Minus 30mm for the clearance gap below the gate. This is to allow the gate to open freely and not catch.
3. Finally, these measurements will leave you with a total height for your gate.

We will manufacture your gate to the exact height and width measurements you order, without deducting any tolerances or gaps. Therefore, it’s important you take these off in your own measurements.

Our split gates will open either inwards or outwards. You can decide which way they will operate when installing the hinges. For example, from the front view, the hinge will either be flush against the front of the post and gate to open outwards, or flush against the back of the post and gate to open inwards.

If you are planning for your split gates to open outwards, you will need to include a hinge packer to your order.
